Recently we were in the market for a new puppy. We had contacted different local vendors both in person and via the internet, but felt their target pricing was just too high, receiving quotes in the $1,500+ range for the breed we wanted. Lancaster Puppies was recommended to us by a friend and we decided to see what they had to offer. Lancaster Puppies is a website that has many breeders from different areas posting their puppies for sale. The site is lancasterpuppies.com makes searching for the puppy of your choice super easy and convenient. You can search based on breed, location, puppies that are available immediately, and even puppies that are currently on sale. It has a huge selection of adorable puppies available at your fingertips, and you can't beat that kind of convenience. After completing our online search, we narrowed our selection down to three choices and then began to call the vendors. We were able to make contact with the Amish family that was offering the puppy for sale via phone, by leaving a message. They were great about returning the call and as we would be traveling to Lancaster for a vacation day on an upcoming Friday, we made plans to visit the puppy we had selected as our #1 choice. We thought it would be best to go see the puppy after our fun day at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm cherrycrestfarm.com (see other blog about that great place) which is also located in Lancaster and see if this little guy could be the puppy that could work for our family. The day came for our adventure! We traveled to Lancaster and enjoyed the fantastic Agri-Entertaiment farm known as Cherry Crest. Afterwards, it was time to go check out our new, potential furry friend. The Amish family had given us their address. We were able to put it into the GPS and find their location with no problem. The drive through the BEAUTIFUL, Pennsylvania, Amish farm country was an incredible treat in and of itself. It was just before the end of the day and there were many Amish in their fields, working with teams of mules and horses. It was a great educational sight to see for our children. It was also a great educational experience for our children to be able to visit a HUGE, active Amish farm, which was where our puppy friend happened to be located. As we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely Amish woman named Elizabeth. She had been waiting for us and came out right away. Out of one of the nearby Amish barns, came several puppies, including an adorable chocolate lab, to meet us as well! What a great little guy this furry friend was, and one that passed the informal test of all our family members. He was the one for us! After some informal and very interesting chatting with Elizabeth, we paid cash for this sweet little guy and were thrilled to welcome a new member to our family!
We highly recommend Lancaster Puppies! Our experience with them had proven to be fantastic. Not only did we get a great puppy for MUCH LESS than vendors had wanted around our local area, we had the educational experience of seeing and being on an Amish farm (it's like being in a different world and in a different time period) and made an incredible memory as a family from this Lancaster trip.
Tips:
Depending on the "order" of the particular Amish folks you are dealing with, they do not believe/allow their picture to be taken. So ask first before any photo ops.
Be considerate. The Amish gentleman we dealt with had been very irritated as there had been a person before us who had called and made an appointment to see the puppy. He ended up not showing up and the Amish gentleman let us know that "he didn't even have the decency to call and let him know that he was not going to show up". The Amish are very busy with their farm work and appreciate being treated with courtesy.
Make a day or even an weekend of it. There are oodles of fantastic things to do and see in the Lancaster area. Plan a leisure trip and get your dream puppy besides.
Many of the dogs offered on the Lancaster Puppies site already have their AKC papers. Others, like our dog are eligible to get their AKC papers. We were pleased to receive a "Lancaster Puppies" folder from the Amish family once we purchased our dog. It included a vet certificate that showed the dog had been examined, AKC registration papers, a receipt for our purchase and a "Health Certificate and Health Guarantee" paper that included the "PA Dog Purchaser Protection Act Information".
